Our show’s title, Recalling Lost Joy, does not sit quietly on a shelf like a piece of broken pottery. No…it is vital…asks for action, involvement, investment.
Another way to say this might be to suggest we are often confronted with portals…into the past or into the future…and are invited to make a choice.  The Covid pandemic is our most recent and vivid example. My niece, Nora Poole, who is often my studio partner and collaborator, (a piece we made together is in this show) wrote the following about our collective experience of the pasts few years:The portal is the pandemic. The portal appears far away but quickly engulfs everyone; we're passing through it alone, all together. It sounds like a warning and a quiet invitation. It looks like a dewdrop suspended in a spiderweb, the past and future all visible. It's a crystalline crucible of a moment where we choose what to bring into the new world and what to leave behind.
Our piece, Pages from an Unfinished Journal, my What We Want collaboration with Peyton Russell, Koan designed and printed with Gloria Ruff and Jack Mader, and the broadside The Offbeat Sayings of Glenn Roberts, all surfaced the joy of creating with others…something we often had to forego during the past two years.  Anticipating hanging our work together in the gallery, anticipating the “conversations” between our separate pieces will take on a larger life, a community life, has been a sustaining energy for me.
